Never say never

Our move today was reasonably smooth in spite of a horrible drizzle descending pretty much all day. At least it was cooler than it has been lately. read more...

Mission accomplished!

The story so far: We were so disappointed. We had looked at a whole heap of houses over the course of this particular Friday afternoon not to mention the last few years - and we really have seen all the dross going. read more...

Mission Impossible

Now we are back from France and with Jackie getting ever larger we got to the point of deciding that our housing issues really needed cracking. Several months ago we made a pact - along the lines of "if we haven't found anything we want to buy by Easter we will rent instead". read more...

Househunt 3: Conservatory

The sequel-to-the-sequel of our house-hunting efforts was pretty epic seeing five houses, in the rain - of course ending in the disaster of our clutch going ping on the A666. Preparation-wise we I made a nice map of the area showing exactly where we were supposed to be going, including house numbers, an innovation which made us feel all the more organised - but didn't stop me faffing around before leaving the house and making us rather late. read more...

April fools

Americans would call it "Super Saturday" but I wouldn't, I'd just call it "Tiring-but-positive Saturday"; we saw eight houses - and failed to see two - as ever with this game there were things we liked and things we didn't like and if we could roll all the houses into one we would be left with the perfect home. We'll take the decor from Hampstead Lane - it was all plain and freshly done with cream carpets and walls. read more...

House us house us

We went to see three houses today - a good one, a mediocre one and one that was, well full of dogs. This is our first really serious effort to go round places - chosen quite carefully from around the internet - and really was a very encouraging kind of day. read more...

Back in the housing gravy boat

I know we have been moaning for ever about where we live - but with the advent of Tintin our cottonmill des-res is just not going to cut the mustard and we would both benefit from being on the right side of Manchester. That means Stockport - or more specifically the area around Woodsmoor and Hazel Grove. read more...

Like your granny used to live there

We all know that estate agents are a peculiar breed. During the week I had been hitting the phone and arranged to see nine properties on Saturday, though this inevitably descended to seven as the agents phoned up one by one to say that properties had been let and that new ones had come on. read more...

A flat near Astley Bridge
This 2 bed Ground Floor Flat while new and shiny was simply too small and on the ground floor. Had it been bigger and upstairs we might have been properly interested. The layout of the tiny kitchen involved having the fridge inaccessible behind the door.A house in Bromley CrossA house in Bromley Cross
This had some character but was not quite right. The rooms were of decent size but it was dark and clearly had not been well maintained or refurbished - as evident from the array of interesting electrical fittings. The sounds of traffic permeated through the house right to the back, there was nowhere to park, there was an even worse fridge in cubbyhole-under-stairs miles away from the kitchen situation going on, enormous ugly stone fireplaces and I could not stand up in the bath.A house in Bradley Fold

Wonkers

Those of you who have been following our recent obsessions will be aware that we are getting kicked out of the flats due to redevelopment and general scummyness and are looking for a house. <br/>I think I've come to a few conclusions over the last few weeks: Other people buying houses are richer than usPeople selling houses will be richer than usEstate agents are all wonkers This may seem very obvious but it takes a little while to figure out that you can't just go round a house and say that you want to buy it. read more...

Going down

I've decided that house prices are now officially GOING DOWN, mainly due to the high profile news stories about how over-inflated the market has got, and the general realisation that it's all bent. If it's not going down then I think everyone should just decide to PAY LESS FOR MORE as that will help the matter. read more...
