Blade Runner

If you get the chance and you like that kind of thing, go see the re-edit of Ridley Tiddly Scott's Blade Runner as soon as possible. It was on at the Cornerhouse for just three nights back in December and I was so glad that I decided to make the effort to see it. read more...

The Darjeeling Limited

The other night while at a loose end I wandered into the Cornerhouse and bought myself a ticket to see The Darjeeling Limited. I was very glad I did. read more...

Matinée at the Savoy

We have lived in the Heatons for nearly a year but not quite made it to the Savoy Cinema until today. Normally their "grown up" shows start at 8 which is a touch on the late side for our domestic schedules and we have always ended up down at the Didsbury multiplex. read more...

Timothy Dalton shows Simon Pegg a biscuit in Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz

The other weekend we stashed Laurel with her ever willing grandmother and went to see Hot Fuzz at the cinema in Parrs Wood. The basic plot involves a hot-shot cop who gets sent to the countryside where he encounters a swan, a pub, some teenagers with hoodies and Timothy Dalton playing a very creepy supermarket manager. read more...

The lady in the water

I have a serious soft spot for fables and fairy stories. The slightly unusual and earthy ones such as Kipling's Just so stories were particular favourites and lets face it I have every excuse to indulge this again for the sake of laurel. read more...

Look both ways

Despite Laurel's general good behaviour and health, the stresses and strains of parenthood have somehow meant that it has been quite hard to relax to the point of sinking into a nice film of an evening. Either we stop because other things take precedence or one or other of us falls asleep or we are just too distractable to concentrate properly. read more...

Le diner de cons

One of the more uplifting (non-baby-related) moments over the last few weeks was a slightly random film we got from screenselect LoveFilm entitled Le diner de cons. Not only did we manage to watch it all in pretty much one sitting but it was exactly the brand of silliness required. read more...

Memoirs of a Geisha

The other day we watched Memoirs of a Geisha - in fits and starts what with needing to sleep and mind the baby of course. The film had been on our list for some time and in fact we took it out from the video shop in Bolton a few months back and returned it unwatched as we hadn't found time for viewing. read more...

Ondskan

If unpleasant goings on in posh public schools is a not uncommon genre of film this particular Swedish take on the theme, Ondskan (which translates as Evil) has to be up there with the best of them. It has a rather extreme but utterly compelling take on youth, the code of the playground and the mentality of bullies. read more...

Monkey Business

We decided to head back to the Trafford Centre today to pick up the laptop and to finish off our rather satisfactorily almost complete Christmas gift mission. Inevitably, after a couple of productive hours we succumbed to food at Ma Potters (website doesn't work of course). read more...

Turkish Delight

To rest our tired feet after all that hoofing round the Trafford Centre we meandered our way to the cinema and after a bit of needless faffing on my part (I've got too many bags and a purse full of coppers and I can't afford two drinks and the film is about to start except that it is so not because there are more adverts and trailers than the law allows and I've got a pound in my pocket only it's a euro) we settled in to watch The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I was a big fan of the books and stormed my way through them at the tender age of seven so, as with Lord of the Rings had very high expectations for the film version. read more...

The Brothers Grimm

A much anticipated trip to the flicks was finally realised this evening as we went to see Gilliam's latest work; The Brothers Grimm. We were promised darkness and boy did we get it - if only we had a couple of eight-year-olds to take with us they would be scared shitless. read more...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

No prizes for guessing where we were at 00:30 this morning. With enormous levels of excitement built up from watching the other two prequels we headed into Manchester around 9 to stuff ourselves with food at East in Chinatown before our late night cinematic romp. read more...

A mixed bag

We had promised ourselves not to venture into the video rental shop again until at least April because we can never find anything good we haven't already seen or bought. However on the way back from our reccy of South Manchester on Sunday, Global Video on the Blackburn Road called our names too loudly to ignore and once again we fell for the eternal 3 for 2 offer on 'new' releases. read more...

We've just got home from seeing Sideways at the UGC and feeling inspired have opened a bottle of Château Coucy 1994. We liked it both of us - having had a slight fear before we set off that it would be some awful predictable road movie but no. read more...

The day after tomorrow yesterday

Having been highly recommended by one of my uber-bosses we got The Day After Tomorrow out from the video shop on Friday. It was certainly visually spectacular and very resonant in this age of Bolton's sideways rain, winds, snow and sleet, not to mention the odd tsunami. read more...

Another day, another action movie

At the weekend we went to see Paycheck for sci-fi nonsense purposes. The verdict was that it was a good story with some good ideas in it, (hooray for Philip K Dick) but why oh why did they have to put it into such a formulaic action film. read more...
