For my birthday way back in darkest December, Jackie got us tickets for Edward Scissorhands at the Lowry. Having seen excellent reviews, we were looking forward to a very different sort of show and came away with nothing but praise. It was a bright, lively dance orientated adaptation of the film, supported by a live orchestra. It is an absolute feast for the eyes of colour and movement. The sets, with much use of layered screens and projection, were stunning and the costumes beautifully defined the characters. The whole thing looked as though it must have been extremely complicated to co-ordinate, but it comes together perfectly. Catch it if you can. If you're a fan of the film you'll love it, if you like dance shows you'll love it and if you just want a good couple of hours entertainment you'll love it. Keep an eye on the topiary.
The aforementioned orchestra did a rather good job mostly melting away into the action - and we couldn't quite see right down into the pit but it looked like they had two percussionists, a cello, a fiddle and three keyboard players subbing for everything else from flutes to slicey noises. The impressive synthesis even included a slidey and raucous impression of a horn section in the second half. Fabulous.
